Ren'Go Privacy Policy
Effective 2026-10-29.
What Ren'Go is
Section titled “What Ren'Go is”Ren'Go is an iPhone and iPad app that imports and plays visual novels made with the Ren'Py engine. You bring the games. Ren'Go does not provide games, download games or link to sites that offer them.
What stays on your device
Section titled “What stays on your device”The games you import, their saves, the screenshots you take in a game and the cache of translated text stay in Ren'Go's own storage on your device. Ren'Go does not upload them anywhere. iOS may include Ren'Go's storage in your device backup, which you control in iOS Settings.
No accounts, no tracking, no ads
Section titled “No accounts, no tracking, no ads”Ren'Go has no accounts, no ads and no analytics. It does not track you across other apps or websites, and it uses no advertising identifier. It contains no third-party SDK that collects data. A game you import is software from its author, and anything a game does on its own is outside this policy.
Translation
Section titled “Translation”When you turn translation on for a game, Ren'Go translates the game's text on your device with Apple's Translation framework. iOS downloads the language packs it needs. Ren'Go does not send the game's text to the developer or to any server of its own. The translated text is saved on your device and is deleted with the game or when you clear the game's cache.
Compatibility reports
Section titled “Compatibility reports”Compatibility reports are optional and off by default. You can turn them on in Settings, Privacy, Send compatibility reports. When they are on, Ren'Go sends one report when a game starts and one when a game fails. A report has these seven fields and nothing else:
- app: the Ren'Go version.
- runtime: the Ren'Py engine version that Ren'Go used to run the game, 8.5.3 or 7.8.7.
- gameVersion: the game's own Ren'Py version number, digits and dots only, at most 32 characters, when Ren'Go can tell.
- result: whether the game started, crashed, exited or failed to start (started, crash, exit or failedStart).
- failureKind: the kind of failure, as a category name only, such as missingModule. Never the error message, the traceback or the name of a missing module.
- ios: the iOS major version.
- device: the device family, such as iPhone or iPad.
Ren'Go never sends the game's title, file names, saves, text or screenshots.
Reports go to Apple's CloudKit public database in the developer's CloudKit container. Ren'Go sends no name, email address, device identifier or advertising identifier. CloudKit stores an opaque identifier with each record. Reports from the same iCloud account carry the same opaque identifier, assigned by Apple's CloudKit. The developer cannot map it to a person. It lets the developer tell the reports of one iCloud account from those of another. Sending needs an iCloud account on the device. A report that cannot be sent waits in a small file on your device (at most 200 reports) and is deleted once it is sent, or when you turn the setting off.
When the setting is off, Ren'Go creates no reports. If a game crashes or exits with an error, the failure screen offers "Send a compatibility report". Tapping it sends that one report and leaves the setting off. If that send fails, Ren'Go does not store the report.
Files you import
Section titled “Files you import”A game you import is copied into Ren'Go's storage on your device and stays there. When you delete a game, Ren'Go deletes its files. You can choose to keep its saves, and you can delete them later in the Storage screen.
Open source and relink offer
Section titled “Open source and relink offer”Ren'Go includes open source software. The credits are in Settings under Acknowledgements. Ren'Go links the FFmpeg and fribidi libraries under the LGPL 2.1. The object files and build scripts needed to relink Ren'Go against a different version of these libraries are available on request for three years from the contact address below.
Changes to this policy
Section titled “Changes to this policy”If this policy changes, the new text ships with the app and the effective date at the top changes.
