Ren'Go stands on open-source work. This page credits projects whose design or code informed Ren'Go, with their licences.

Ren'Go embeds the Ren'Py visual novel engine (MIT licensed) and uses its prebuilt iOS packages and build tooling (ios_create/ios_populate). Ren'Py is Copyright 2004-2026 Tom Rothamel and contributors. Ren'Go is not affiliated with the Ren'Py project. Ren'Py's iOS stack also links LGPL libraries; see the licences page.

The bundled sample game The Question ships with the Ren'Py SDK under the same MIT terms; its notice is retained in the app's Acknowledgements screen. It is included so new users and App Review can see a game run.

The Ren'Py engine inside Ren'Go links FFmpeg and fribidi under the LGPL. The object files and build scripts needed to relink Ren'Go against a different version of these libraries are available on request for three years from rengo@celikyunusemre.dev. The rebuild steps are in the relink page, which is delivered with the offer. The full list of Ren'Py licences is at renpy.org/l/license.

The Ren'Py 7.8.7 engine links OpenSSL 1.1.1s, which is licensed under the OpenSSL and SSLeay licences. Those licences require this notice:

This product includes software developed by the OpenSSL Project for use in the OpenSSL Toolkit (http://www.openssl.org/).

This product includes cryptographic software written by Eric Young (eay@cryptsoft.com).

This product includes software written by Tim Hudson (tjh@cryptsoft.com).

The Ren'Py 8.5.3 engine links OpenSSL 3.3.2, which is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. The notice also appears in the Acknowledgements screen of the app.

Ren'Go's iOS build recipe (vendoring the renios package, running ios_create/ios_populate headlessly, the CPython-3.12 pin, the overlay and file-mailbox bridge mechanisms) was learned from renpy-mobile by NoCritics, MIT licensed. We studied its design and device findings and wrote our own code. Where a non-trivial piece is adapted, it is noted at the adaptation site and here.

  • scripts/ios/fetch_ios_deps.sh and scripts/ios/generate_xcode.sh are adapted from renpy-mobile's scripts/ios/ of the same names.
  • ios/engine/python/rengo_shell.py and rengo_hook.rpe.py follow renpy-mobile's shell/vnshell/lifecycle.py and vnplayer_hook.rpe.py: the .rpe.py extension loaded from config.renpy_base, the get_alternate_base resolver, and UtterRestartException as the switch. ios/swift/RenGoOverlay.swift and ios/RenGoOverlayInstall.m follow its overlay window rules.

Ren'Go reads RAR archives with Unrar.swift 0.5.4. Its Swift part is MIT licensed.

The Cunrar target of Unrar.swift is the unRAR source code (version 7.23), Copyright Alexander Roshal, under the unRAR licence. Ren'Go uses it only to extract RAR archives that the user imports. It never creates a RAR archive and never re-creates the RAR compression algorithm. Ren'Go distributes the unRAR source unmodified and carries the licence paragraph anyway:

UnRAR source code may be used in any software to handle RAR archives without limitations free of charge, but cannot be used to develop RAR (WinRAR) compatible archiver and to re-create RAR compression algorithm, which is proprietary. Distribution of modified UnRAR source code in separate form or as a part of other software is permitted, provided that full text of this paragraph, starting from "UnRAR source code" words, is included in license, or in documentation if license is not available, and in source code comments of resulting package.

The package's remaining terms: the copyright in RAR and UnRAR belongs to Alexander Roshal. The software is distributed "as is" with no warranty, and the author is not liable for data loss, damages or loss of profits. Installing and using UnRAR signifies acceptance of the terms. Ren'Go does not modify the unRAR source.

Ren'Go bundles Noto Sans CJK SC Regular and Noto Sans Arabic Regular (Copyright The Noto Project Authors, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, fetched by scripts/ios/fetch_fonts.sh) as fallback glyph sources for translated text. The OFL text ships beside them in the app's fonts/ folder and is shown in the Acknowledgements screen.
